A Pakistani man, aged 33 and not in the best physical shape, was arrested for alleged theft in Mong Kok in Kowloon on Tuesday, but police are still hunting his alleged companion-in-crime.
The two South Asian men approached a man from mainland China surnamed Zhang at about 11am. Zhang came to Hong Kong as a tourist and was chatting with friends in Sai Yee Street Garden in Mong Kok when the two alleged thieves approached him, stole his bag and ran off, Oriental Daily reported.
Zhang and his friends chased after the pair and passed through an alley off Soy Street, to Hak Po Street, Pak Po Street and all the way to the intersection of Waterloo Road and Wylie Road.
After running for about 300 meters, the Pakistani man was exhausted. He had to stop for a rest – sitting down on the street. A university student who saw the chase helped Zhang catch the man, while another local man reported the case to police, Apple Daily reported.
Police arrested the suspect, who is a asylum seeker, and detained him at a police station.
However, Zhang’s bag, containing HK$1,100 (US$140) and 1,000 Chinese yuan (US$153) in cash and his passport, were not found.
Police are hunting for the other suspect, who was believed to have taken the bag.
