A 53-year-old local man was arrested for suspected cruelty to animals in Tuen Mun in the New Territories on Tuesday.
Police raided a flat in Po Tin Estate in Tuen Mun at 11.30pm and arrested the man, surnamed Lui, for allegedly abusing a dog in a supermarket in Po Tin Shopping Centre, Radio Television Hong Kong reported.
A five-second video surfaced on social media on Sunday showing a middle-aged man kicking a dog on the ground at the entrance of the supermarket. The dog lost its balance and fell on the ground before escaping.
The dog allegedly had a new owner who lives nearby but it got lost in the shopping mall. The animal went to the supermarket to wait for its former owner, Sing Tao Daily reported.
However, the suspect questioned staff about why there was a dog in a supermarket and got emotional. He allegedly grabbed the animal, threw it on the ground and kicked it – and some of what he did was filmed by a passerby.
Tuen Mun police investigated the case after the video went viral online.
The new owner later found the dog and checked its condition, but it was not badly hurt, Headline Daily reported.
