At least 22 people drowned and many others are missing after a boat capsized on the Yamuna River while en route to Haryana from Baghpat in Uttar Pradesh, according to media reports.
PTI reported that there were 60 people on the boat, which sank close to Katha village, 20 km from the district headquarters, according to District Magistrate Bhawani Singh. Singh said: “The boat was ferrying passengers more than its capacity. Most of the passengers of the ill-fated boat were women. As soon as the boat reached midstream it capsized.”
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed grief over the incident and announced that Rs2 lakh (US$3,100) compensation for victims’ kin would be issued, adding that a probe has been ordered into the incident.
