The Japanese finance and trade ministries have determined that Chinese exports of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) products, commonly used for beverage bottles, are being sold at unfairly low prices, reports Nikkei Asian Review.

Hearings will be held later to interview Chinese firms, after which duties of up to 54% could be levied in accordance with WTO rules.

The probe was initiated at the request of four businesses including Mitsui Chemicals, following a steep increase in PET imports from China, which rose 40% between 2013 and 2015.
