An 18-year-old man was shot dead and another person was injured when soldiers mistook a firecracker thrown at them for a grenade on Friday in central Kashmir’s Budgam district.

Tanveer Ahmed Pala and Mohammed Ibrahim Wani were rushed to hospital with gunshot wounds after the incident. Pala died and Wani was believed to be in stable condition.

NDTV reported that the soldiers were on foot patrol in the district’s Beerwah area. When they were approaching their camp, a group of people started throwing stones at them.

“Suddenly, someone threw a firecracker [at the] security forces,” Inspector General of Police Munir Khan was quoted as saying. “When it burst with a loud noise, the soldiers mistook it for a grenade and fired in the direction from where the firecracker came.”

After the incident, thousands protested against Pala’s killing by marching with his body through Beerwah town.
