A BJP official sparked a Twitter storm by posting a dubious photo on the microblogging site.

Nupur Sharma, the Delhi Bharatiya Janata Party spokesperson, was trolled on Twitter, after she allegedly posted a photo of the 2002 Gujarat riots, claiming it was taken during the violence in West Bengal’s Basirhat, according to media reports.

Sharma tweeted, “Since trolls spent a sleepless night covering up Basirhat violence, sharing media pics of the riots. Hope they report this to @WBPolice too,” which was followed by a backlash from Twitter users accusing her of spreading false rumors on social media.

PTI reported that Sharma defended herself, saying that irrespective of where it was taken, the picture reflected the reality witnessed in West Bengal.

“There are questions being asked on the unrelated picture, but why is there reaction on the riots in Bengal or on minority appeasement that is happening there,” she said.
