A Kerala school has come up with an innovative solution to a back-breaking problem.

Instead of making children carry heavy bags to school on foot, which can cause back pain and posture problems, GM Upper Primary School in Kattampally is sending a van around to pick them up at their homes.

About 300 pupils, many of whom cannot afford the bus service, are taking advantage of the scheme, the Times of India reported. It is hoped that the initiative will also encourage more children to walk to school and reduce dependence on motor vehicles.

NM Ravi, the teacher who spearheaded the initiative, was quoted as saying, “We introduced the facility … as many students found it difficult to carry heavy bags to school.”
