While the newly elected South Korean president is eager to thaw relations with Beijing, and convince them to lift informal economic sanctions, he is attempting the difficult task of getting off on the right foot with Trump at the same time.

In an interview with Reuters on Thursday, despite recent indications that he was drifting toward Beijing’s approach to North Korea, Kim sounded more like Trump than anybody else.

“I believe China is making efforts to stop North Korea from making additional provocations, yet there are no tangible results as of yet,” echoing Trump’s recent tweet that China’s help with North Korea “has not worked out.” Moon specifically added “I can sympathize with [President Trump’s] message.
