A Hong Kong couple were found dead in a Bela Vista Villa rental holiday resort home in Cheung Chau on Thursday afternoon after apparently drinking wine and burning charcoal.

The 29-year-old man and 36-year-old woman checked into a Bela Vista villa as a married couple for three days on Monday and requested a one-day extension, so they had to check out by noon on Thursday, Metro Daily reported.

An employee went to check on the couple at 2pm because they had not returned the key, but no one answered the door. Police and firefighters were called and arrived at the villa, which was reportedly locked and the windows had been sealed.

The couple were found lying dead on the bed next to a metallic barbecue pit with charcoal ash, while empty wine bottles were also found on the floor and suspected sleeping pills, Apple Daily reported.

No suicide note was recovered. Preliminary police investigation suggested no foul play. The families of the deceased couple did not know each other.
