A 45-year-old salesman and service engineer was given 21 months in jail and four strokes of the cane after a Singapore court found him guilty of molesting his niece.

He was convicted of one count of sexual abuse last month after a five-day trial.

On February 10, 2014, the man lured the then 13-year-old daughter of his wife’s sister to his home and touched her private parts, The Straits Times reported. The court ordered media not to disclose the man’s name to protect the girl’s identity.

Before the incident, the girl had felt close to her uncle, who later abused his authority over the victim by sexually assaulting the girl.

The girl talked about the incident to her teacher who called the police.

The man was granted S$25,000 (US$18,023) bail, pending an appeal.

In Singapore, the maximum penalty for molesting a girl is a five-year sentence, a fine and caning.
