A couple died in an apparent murder-suicide in a Lohas Park residential estate of Tseung Kwan O in the New Territories district of Sai Kung late on Thursday evening.

A 66-year-old retired engineer from Hongkong Electric Company, Wong Man-bun, plunged out the 30th floor flat in The Capitol tower block in Lohas Park and hit the clubhouse swimming pool.

At 12.40am, the clubhouse security guard called police after finding the man floating unconscious in the pool, Oriental Daily reported.

It is believed the man had financial troubles and he had left a note before taking his own life.

The police also received a call from a 34-year-old Hong Kong woman who found her 63-year-old mother, Yau Choi-hung, on the bed in their 30th floor flat, who appeared to have been strangled to death with a nylon rope.

Police suspect that the father had strangled his wife before he jumped.

Preliminary investigation showed the couple had no history of chronic illnesses. A suicide note written by Wong was recovered in the home, saying that he was in financial trouble and he would not want it to become a problem to his wife as well, public broadcaster RTHK reported.

Police have listed the case as a murder-suicide, and the Kwun Tong district crime squad is in charge of the investigation.
