The US restaurant industry posted its fifth consecutive quarter of negative results, the worst downturn since the great recession, according to data from Black Box Intelligence.
- Same-store sales fell 1.6%
- Restaurant traffic was down 3.6%
- Average check was up 1.9%, down from average 2.3% increase in 2016
- Worst performers were sit-down dining and fast casual (such as Chiptotle)
- Best performers were fine dining and quick-service (traditional fast-food such as McDonald’s)
