A 39-year-old Filipino maid was fined HK$800 (US$103) on Friday after she was convicted in a Hong Kong court on a theft charge for eating her employer’s meatballs worth HK$100.
In January, Mildred Nilo Ladia was charged with two counts of theft. She was accused of stealing an agnès b brand handbag and two leather slippers on January 11 last year. Ladia was also accused of eating meatballs between March 28 and April 10 in her employer’s Repulse Bay home.
In May last year, barrister Gekko Lan Suet-ying, the maid’s then employer, had deducted HK$100 from Ladia’s statutory salary of HK$4,210.
On Friday, the prosecutor dropped the first charge as Lan, who was in hospital, failed to be appear as a witness in the Eastern Magistrates’ Court, Apple Daily reported. Ladia, who came Hong Kong in August 2015 and had previously worked in Singapore, Malaysia and Saudi Arabia, admitted the second charge, but pleaded in exchange for a lighter penalty.
The magistrate fined the maid HK$800, instead of sending her to jail, because Ladia has to financially support her family in the Philippines, Sing Tao Daily reported.
You are right…she make the big deal of meatballs that make to laugh to us to everybody and also there friends i think because not all are same of here..take note all helper be alert about food…
We are not against some issue to her but in other case about meatballs is to insulting to everybody who knows this ,its to funny that this employer she included to her complaint..very stupid ,she need to think before doing her action ,she forget that she is employer..thats the reason the helper still her because of stupid case she filed..the law just consedered to fined the helper to the employer because maybe she asking the justice of meatballs ….next time employer use your brain dont make shame your self to the whole world ..

No stealing issue,all was done in good faith but his employer made this accusations for no reason.All was shocked about the courts decision.

So, helper was hungry and ate some meatballs. Employer deducted $100 from salary and then called the police about meatballs (and a handbag)….if the handbag was so expensive why didn’t the employer deduct the max allowable ($300)? If this was about meatballs then this poor helper has paid $900 now for meatballs?!?

well lessons for employers too provide adequate food for helpers bec.most of us here we buy our own food paano kasi iba diyan nag provide lang ng noodles.baka siya nagutum kaya hayun meatballs ang kinain niya.
Ganito po tlaga Ang situation namin s Hong Kong kulang s pagkain pero mlaki nmn Ang food allowance namin n nkasaad sa contract pirmado both parties pero ayaw nila ibigay at isinasama n lng kmi s budget nila halos yung dpt food allowance nmng helper yun Ang nagiging expenses lng s pagkain including the helper.

So lame argument,to think that the employer is a barrister(?). This whole issue, as I see it,is more on saving the employers face. A professional and well civilized employer,won’t waste their important time for a hundred dollar meat balls in court. So low….. She could have just fired the maid if she was so pissed off with her meatballs being eaten by another human being in her home,gosh!she’s disgusting!�
