A 39-year-old Filipino maid was fined HK$800 (US$103) on Friday after she was convicted in a Hong Kong court on a theft charge for eating her employer’s meatballs worth HK$100.
In January, Mildred Nilo Ladia was charged with two counts of theft. She was accused of stealing an agnès b brand handbag and two leather slippers on January 11 last year. Ladia was also accused of eating meatballs between March 28 and April 10 in her employer’s Repulse Bay home.
In May last year, barrister Gekko Lan Suet-ying, the maid’s then employer, had deducted HK$100 from Ladia’s statutory salary of HK$4,210.
On Friday, the prosecutor dropped the first charge as Lan, who was in hospital, failed to be appear as a witness in the Eastern Magistrates’ Court, Apple Daily reported. Ladia, who came Hong Kong in August 2015 and had previously worked in Singapore, Malaysia and Saudi Arabia, admitted the second charge, but pleaded in exchange for a lighter penalty.
The magistrate fined the maid HK$800, instead of sending her to jail, because Ladia has to financially support her family in the Philippines, Sing Tao Daily reported.
What a shame to this kind of employer…. … poor to this helper…. and she fou d this kind of inhuman employer…. there must be . A filipino community who will donate meatball to this employer maybe they will get hungry…����� i can u u madam a meatball.. made by me… it yummy and tasty for sure…. this kind of employer dont deserve . Helper inside the house… so shameful….

The charges of theft filed by her employer was dropped by the judge because the employer was not able to defend the theft charge he filed against his/her maid.If the employer was so convinced that the maid stole an agnes b bag and 2 leather slippers, then she would have appealed and re scheduled another hearing to defend the theft case but she did not. It only means that the maid did not steal a bag and slippers… U understand that now or U still insist?. It seems U have a personal vendetta towards this poor maid..Gusto mo yatang makulong ang tao sa kasung di nya ginawa..
Jacqueline Coplaten. Read Properly.. Hindi proven na nagnakaw sya ng bag at tsinelas.. Binasura ng judge ang charges na nakaw sa kanya dahil hindi nadipensahan ng amo.. Lawyer daw ang amo nya at di hamak na maitim ang budhi.. Parti ng trabaho ng lawyer na gawing baluktot ang tama. It is what they are trained to do.
It was obviously proven that she did not steal an Agnes b bag and 2 leather slippers. And yes she admitted eating meatballs from time to time because she is hungry and had nothing to eat. According to the emoyment contract employers are suppose to provide food toiletries and a room for their maid. In most cases toiletries are not being provided by employers and the food, oftentimes is very little per meal, not eniugh to feed a hungey stomach and overworked body.
I know a few employers like that mostly foreign employers (mexicans the worst)) prob ably starving her and working her to death

I used to work for a recruitment company that deploy DH to HK . I encounter a lot of issues like this . But for the most part employers can’t afford to pay their helper and they try to scum them . I’m not saying she is innocent I’m saying a lot of employers they do that .
