Chinese smartphone giant Huawei has entered into a deal with the Philippines’ largest telecom firm, Philippine Long Distance and Telephone Co (PLDT), for research and development of a 5G network to cover the country, reported the Star.  Huawei has faced bans from working on broadband projects in the US and Australia, amid fears that the company’s ties to the Chinese military could pose threats to national security. Questioned about such fears, spokesman for PLDT Ramon Isberto said that Huawei will only provide technology, not run the networks.
