Holland has the highest proportion of exports to GDP of any industrial nation, at 82%. That makes the Dutch the least protectionist people in the world. Holland has lived off exports since it invented the herring trade in the 15th century. Dutch populist Geert Wilders garnered protest votes from Netherlanders fed up with immigration, but he never had a program with which to rule Holland. His anti-European rhetoric and endorsement of the Alternative fuer Deutschland did not help him. The AfD wants to stop apologizing for the sort of German behavior that caused enormous suffering in Holland during World War II. Yesterday’s elections gave Wilders a protest vote but not a mandate. European markets breathed a gigantic sigh of relief.
