A 52-year-old Hong Kong man was given an eight-month prison sentence on Tuesday after being found guilty of stealing money from Mass Transit Railway ticket machines between August and September, 2016.
Restaurant manager Leung Fu-wah abused a system fault that allowed him to steal a total of HK$51,636.5 (US$6,647) from 48 different stations across Hong Kong, Oriental Daily reported.
Police arrested Leung on September 13 last year in Central MTR station after seizing a map, two HK$100 notes, 30 HK$10 coins and two stored value cards. Sing Tao Daily reported that security cameras had caught him 329 times interfering with ticket machines.
Leung had worked out that the ticket machine would give back double the ticket price if several buttons were pressed at the same time as money was inserted. A railway engineer said this was the first time that the MTR system had been aware of the glitch adding that the fault has now been fixed.
