Sweden’s former Prime Minister Göran Persson, who was leader of the Social Democratic Party from 1996 to 2007, believes Donald Trump will not last long as president of the United States.
In an interview with daily Dagens Nyheter, Persson said that people within the Republican Party and members of Congress soon would realize that a “crazy president” is harmful for the country – as well as their own political positions.
“[Trump] will make America small again. And it will not be allowed. I question weather the policies he now announces actually can be implemented,” he said. “I think he will be removed.”
Persson argues that members of Congress themselves will find it difficult to be re-elected in the mid-term elections in November 2018 as long as Trump is president. Therefore they will drive him out of office and let Vice-President Mike Pence, who Persson calls a “normal republican conservative politician” take over.
“[They] will realize that they will not get re-elected because we have a crazy president. Then they will begin to push him out,” Persson said.
Looking at the latest polls from the US, the Swedish politician might be proven right. Since the moment Donald Trump was elected president, debate over his possible impeachment has been raging, something that has increase after his proposed travel ban for people from seven Muslim-majority countries. Now, some 40% of the country – including some Congressmen – wants to see the president impeached, according to the latest national poll from Public Policy Polling.
“Usually a newly elected president is at the peak of their popularity and enjoying their honeymoon period after taking office right now,” Dean Debnam, President of Public Policy Polling, said in a press release.
“But Donald Trump’s making history once again with a sizable share of voters already wanting to impeach him, and a majority of voters wishing they could have Barack Obama back.”
When Trump was elected president in November, Persson, who today is a consultant for PR firm JKL, said that the “intellectual dimension of politics has disappeared.”
“I don’t think Trump will remain long,” he said.

How does it feel to be making emotionally fueled political comments and sounding crazy, pathetic and sad?
Sweden’s problems are due to the same kind of people that want Obama back.
No surprise that this establishment leftist prefers a “normal republican [sic] conservative politician.” That way, the endless merry-go-round of left and careerist "right" can continue on its futile, pointless circuit.
As for the "intellectual" dimension of politics, it’s highly overrated. As are intellectuals, whose utopian delusions have led to the deaths of hundreds of millions.
Simpler folk tend to be far more solidly in contact with day-to-day reality, while lacking the imagination that leads those "smart" types to conjure up their insane head-worlds.
Mr. Persson’s comments might be more believable if they didn’t echo precisely what the Democratic Party, main stream US media and Hilary Clinton were saying…before all of the above proved to be very wrong in the November 2016 election.
After all, it wasn’t just Trump who won. The Republican party – despite the supposed disadvantage of Trump the Presidential candidate – won control of both houses of the US Congress.
Your logic is weak. You seem to be saying that because Sweden has problems that it should therefore respect the choice of people in the US. I cannot see the logic in this piece of argument – how are your ideas connected? You also seem to be saying that having an opinion is usurping a democratic process. Where do you mean? Are only US voters allowed to have an opinion on US politics?
Sweden is among the messiest country in Europe due largely to its liberal policies and its social problems are not going away. The world should learn to respect the choice of the American people. Lets not usurp their democratic process when we have nothing better to offer the world.
