Peerless South Korean military-romance drama “Descendants of the Sun” that became an Asian phenomenon earlier this year will be remade as a movie. It is being said that Chinese director Zhang Yi-bai has been appointed to supervise the production of the movie adaptation. But the big question is who will be starring in the movie? Who can they be other than the Song Joong-ki and Song Hye-kyo couple?

Song Joong-ki and Song Hye-kyo have become the most-popular stars in South Korea, thanks to the “Descendants of the Sun” success. Both of them are adorable together and their on-screen romance was such a huge hit that a section of their die-hard fans wants them dating in the real life as well.

“Descendants of the Sun” has given Song Joong-ki the star status and a more mature Song Hye-kyo the break that she needed to prop up her acting career, apart from awards, magazine covers, high-profile endorsement deals and top slots in popularity charts. Even months after the drama ended, it is still a trending topic online and fans are going gaga over the Songs.

Whoever is chosen to replace the Song-Song couple in the proposed movie will find it extremely difficult to recreate the heart-melting romance that Joong-ki and Hye-kyo gave us in the superhit drama with the same effect, leave alone transcending it. Or, in all likelihood, the same cast could feature in the movie, too.

Even director Yi-bai knows that public expectations for the film will be high. He even stated that at a press conference in Beijing on Tuesday. “I feel big pressure since the TV drama series ‘Descendants of the Sun’ is already a big hit with very charming male and female protagonists,” Asia One quoted him as saying. The drama broke viewership records. “I think the production of a film should not only take advantage of the powerful popularity of the television series but also see some improvement,” he added.

In April, the production company behind the drama, NEW, confirmed that it had received inquiries on remakes and optional publication rights, according to Yibada. Now, the news is out that Chinese movie distributor Huacemedia will make the series into film.

But both Song Joong-ki and Song Hye-kyo are busy right now. Filming for Song Joong-ki’s “Battleship Island” is under way. Meanwhile, Movie News Guide reported that it is unlikely that Song Hye-kyo and Song Joong-ki will reprise their roles as Kang Mo-yeon and Captain Yoo Si-jin. Both are signed on to other projects. Besides, the movie will be handled by a Chinese company, so it is possible they will get Chinese actors. While there is no word about the cast of the proposed “Descendants of the Sun” movie as yet, the chances of Song Joong-ki and Song Hye-kyo starring in the film cannot be ruled out as the film production is scheduled to commence only next year. Meanwhile, a second season of the drama in South Korea is also in the pipeline.

Song Joong-ki had, recently, expressed his wish to romance with Song Hye-kyo once more, on screen. Was it a hint? If yes, will it be in “Descendants of the Sun 2” or the movie? Let’s wait for a year and watch!
