As much as we want to avoid greasy food, we continue eating them because they are delicious. Be it Thai, Indian or Chinese, the dishes usually have more oil or butter, thereby increasing our calorie intake and our cholesterol levels.

Luckily, Thailand has found a solution.

Recently, Thai Health Promotion Foundation, in association with BBDO Bangkok, unveiled an innovative plate design that can reduce up to 7ml of grease or approximately 30 calories per plate.

Called the AbsorbPlate, it is inspired by the texture of a sponge and has hundreds of tiny holes on it to absorb grease and oil.

“Thai food is delicious but sometimes very greasy. There’re hundreds of stir-fry and deep-fry dishes cooked with oil. These greasy dishes cause Thais to have the 2nd highest obesity rate in South East Asia, and create a prevalence of health problems such as high cholesterol and high blood pressure. Unhealthy eating behaviour is hard to change, and most Thai people go for what’s delicious. How can we help Thai people eat healthier without changing their regular meal? We decided to tackle how they eat their food,” stated Thai Health Promotion Foundation in a press release.

The cost of the AbsorbPlate has not been disclosed yet.
