Rats are God in this north Indian temple. You would watch thousands of them in this shrine, munching on food offered or even while it is being prepared. Devotees do not harm them, instead they worship the rats as Gods. Karni Mata Temple is quite popular in the small town of Deshnok, Rajasthan. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Karni, who is regarded as the incarnation of Maa Durga. In the fourteenth century, the Goddess is said to have lived and performed many miracles. As per the stories, once when her youngest son drowned, Goddess Karni restored his life. But she said that her family members would die soon and they would incarnate in the form of rats. In Deshnok, there are around 600 families that assert to be the descendants of Karni Mata.
