In-N-Out, the West Coast’s most famous burger chain, remained America’s favorite burger joint on the newest list of 2019, the CBS LA news channel reported Friday.

The final list was published by Food & Wine website, who surveyed 7,600 consumers about their satisfaction level with various restaurant chains. In-N-Out’s 735 customer satisfaction rating put the chain at the top of the list, Xinhua reported.

McDonald’s came in last on the list of 14 burger chains with a satisfaction score of 28%, while burger list newcomer Five Guys took second with a satisfaction rating of 68%.

However, in the battle for favorite fast food joint, California-based In-N-Out, who had enjoyed the top spot with the highest customer satisfaction ratings for the past two years, was defeated by the Southern chicken chain Chick-fil-A, who scored a 79% satisfaction rating, the report said.

Chick-fil-A’s stance of Christian values has brought them unwanted attention over the last year, especially with their attempt to place their restaurants in airports from Texas to New York, Newsweek reported.

Dan Cathy, the Chick-fil-A president and COO, said in 2012 that marriage should be “between a man and a woman,” which ignited nationwide protests.

For Pizza, California-based, and Laker’s superstar LeBron James-backed Blaze Pizza took the top spot. In the sandwiches category, Wawa won the top spot. Krispy Kreme topped the newest category, coffee and bakery, in the report followed by Panera and Starbucks.

So far, the chain has expanded to 355 locations in the American Southwest and Pacific coast, including Utah, Arizona, Oregon, Texas and Nevada.

While McDonald’s and Burger King serve well over 80 different items, In-N-Out famously serves fewer than 15: burgers, cheeseburgers, fries, soda, milk shakes and the signature two-patty double-double, according to Forbes.

The company will make tweaks from time to time, like switching to a premium Kona coffee and healthier sunflower oil for cooking fries.

Lynsi Snyder, the company’s billionaire president at 37, said: “It’s not [about] adding new products. Or thinking of the next bacon-wrapped this or that. We’re making the same burger, the same fry,” says Snyder. “We’re really picky and strategic. We’re not going to compromise.”

The franchise hasn’t evolved much since Snyder’s grandparents founded it in 1948 — buns are baked with slow-rising dough each morning, the Forbes report said.

Three central facilities grind all the (never-frozen) meat, delivering daily to the 333 restaurants. Heat lamps, microwaves and freezers are banned from the premises. The recipes for its burgers and fries have remained essentially the same for 70 years.

This has earned the family-owned, decades-old business, many fans, including a number of renowned chefs, some of whom have called it “the best restaurant in Los Angeles.”
