A man wanted by the law enforcement was arrested on Saturday at a Cantopop star’s concert in Zhanjiang city at the southwestern end of Guangdong province, China.
At 10pm on July 20, police from Zhanjiang arrived at the Olympic Centre and arrested the man at Hong Kong star Aaron Kwok Fu-shing’s Cantopop concert, the Paper reported, citing a spokesperson from the police public relations branch.
On the same night, the Zhanjiang public security bureau released a video on their official TikTok channel which captured the arrest of the fugitive – whose offenses were not mentioned – because of the facial recognition system which has been in use since the second half of 2017.
According to the media post, the suspect – who admitted to police that he was a genuine fan of the singer – was identified by cameras at the concert’s ticket entrance and apprehended by police in the middle of the show.
It was not the first time Chinese police have used facial recognition systems to catch suspects. Between December 28 and 30 in 2018, more than 22 wanted men were identified at a concert by Hong Kong Cantopop star Jacky Cheung Hok-yau in Suzhou, a city west of Shanghai.
Further arrests are expected as the celebrated singer is still on his ‘Aaron Kwok da Aa Kode’ world tour in Guangdong in China.
