Eight mobile phones supporting 5G have been cleared for release in China, local media reported, which will likely trigger a new round of changes in the cell phone market.

According to the China Quality Certification Centre, the first batch of phones to have their approved 3C certifications belonged to ZTE, One Plus, Oppo, Vivo and Huawei. Four of Huawei’s phones attained certification, one being the upcoming Huawei Mate X, a highly anticipated smartphone with a foldable screen.

For Oppo, their Reno 5G that received the 3C certification was released outside China in April this year. Vivo’s 5G rendition of the iQOO, the One Plus 7 Pro 5G and ZTE’s Axon 10 Pro 5G – which was released in Barcelona in February – also received approval. Huawei’s lineup, apart from the Mate X, includes the TAH-AN00 and the 5G rendition of the Mate 20X.

In order for a 5G phone to be listed, it must attain a total of three certifications: the 3C certification; a network access license and a no-commission approval. Huawei plans to officially release the first 5G smartphone Mate 20X 5G in Shenzhen.

Every generation has its pioneering brand. For example, in the 1G era, Motorola was a market leader but it plummeted in the late ’90s and was overtaken by Ericsson, Nokia and Samsung in the 2G era. By the time 3G rolled out, Apple and Xiaomi took the market by storm, and in the 4G era Oppo and Vivo took the lead. Now it seems Huawei will be leading the charge in the 5G era.

The 5G generation will revolutionize the internet with low latency, high bandwidth and reliability, as well as a large base of connection. It will be able to handle the industrial internet’s needs and bring many new applications with it. At present, 5G telecommunications is being applied in power grids, ports, oil refineries and many other high-powered industries. The 5G technology will also end up being an infrastructure for socio-economic development.
