The rapid transit system in Beijing is undergoing tests on facial recognition ticketing, aiming at providing a hassle-free traveling experience to commuters in the near future.

On July 24, the traffic center of the Beijing municipality announced that travelers would be expected to pay for their public transport rides onboard by tapping the reader using a QR code on their smartphones by the end of this year, the Beijing Youth Daily and the Paper reported.

The entire QR code scanning payment system would be on all public transport systems in the city center, as well as in the countryside around Beijing, officials said.

All Beijing subway stations would have WeChat Pay and Alipay, including functions for recharging an account and paying the fare difference if applicable. This payment system is undergoing tests.

According to a subway spokesperson, the latest facial recognition ticketing technology was also on trial on the airport line.

The company was verifying the accuracy of the photo library and said it would ensure there was 100% verification before the official launch throughout the entire metro system.
