Innovative ideas such as security robots, remote surgery and virtual reality (VR) automotive are going to see opportunities of commercialization in China with 5G technology.
During the three-day Mobile World Congress 2019 (MWC2019) that took place in Shanghai between June 26 and 28, Chinese telecom operators and equipment makers showed their innovative IT products that they predict will change people’s daily lives.
The 5G technology can enable police to respond faster to reduce crime and protect people’s properties, Ryan Ding, executive director and president of Carrier Business Group of Huawei Technologies, said in the company’s “5G is On” event on Tuesday prior to opening of MWC2019.
In the 4G era, it takes about 10 minutes for police officers to arrive a crime site by motorbikes and video footages is only in a definition of 1080p, Ding said. With 5G technology, drones can arrive at a site within four minutes and have 4K live broadcasting with 3D coverage and precise coordination, he said, adding that the time to capture a criminal suspect will be shortened from days to minutes.
In March, Huawei, China Telecom and Shenzhen Public Security Bureau Bao’an Branch signed an agreement to jointly apply 5G, cloud and big data technologies in crime-fighting. The public security bureau said the 4K footage sent from police motorbikes and drones to the police station can increase its efficiency in operations.
China Unicom unveiled products such as security robots, augmented reality police tools and mobile supervision systems. It also demonstrated the idea of the “5G future hospital,” which refers to remote surgery and medical consultations.
In January, Huawei and China Unicom applied the 5G technology in the first-ever remote surgery on an animal in Fujian province. In a laboratory, a doctor successfully performed an hour-long surgery on an animal in a hospital 50 kilometres away.
On March 16, the first remote surgery performed on a human was conducted at the People’s Liberation Army General Hospital in Beijing with the support of Huawei and China Mobile.
In Hebei province, Huawei and China Unicom launched a tourist automobile that can show VR videos on the inside of the windows. The videos change along with the car’s motion and location detected by the control centre through a 5G network. The two companies showed the automobile to MWC2019 visitors with a theme of “space tour” in Shanghai this week.
The effective distance can be increased to 10 meters with a 4K camera from two metres with an ordinary camera, Deng Taihua, senior vice president of Huawei and president of Huawei Wireless Solutions, said at the China Unicom International Partners Meeting in Shanghai. With 5G technology, 4K live broadcasting can help people achieve the goal of “wireless to the camera (WTTc)” and explore the Smart Future.
China Unicom also displayed other products such as 5G food deliverers and wireless pressure meters in water drainage systems.
