Shanghai authorities plan to crack down on illegal activities involving online ride-hailing and other taxi services from Monday.
The Shanghai Urban Transportation Bureau plans to set up more checkpoints, conduct more frequent road inspections, and pay particular attention to taxi-related problems such as overcharging, refusing, detouring or tampering with taximeters, The Paper reported.
Since March 14, 2019, the municipal government has been pushing to legalise and regulate online ride-hailing platforms and services.
Enterprises have been ordered to remove any drivers and their vehicles from their platforms that are not qualified to provide ride-hailing services, or those on a blacklist who had already violated traffic rules, by the end of June.
After the deadline, officers will carry out regular road checks to intercept and examine vehicles conducting ride-hailing services. The owner of illegal vehicles and the online ride-hailing platform will both face penalties.
The ride-hailing platforms should conduct online and offline verification, review newly registered vehicles, and provide their drivers necessary education courses.
