삼성전자가 인도 이동통신업체와 5G 이동통신 장비 테스트에 나설 예정이며 4G 이동통신 장비 공급에 나설 것으로 보인다고 업계 소식통이 27일 밝혔다.
최근 인도 현지 언론인 이코노믹타임스는 화웨이 장비를 사용하는 인도의 통신업체 보다폰 아이디어와 에어텔이 최근 삼성전자와 4G 및 5G 이동통신 장비 도입을 위한 협상에 착수했다고 보도했다. 인도에서 지금까지 삼성과 거래한 통신사는 릴라이언스 지오(Reliance Jio)가 유일했다.
이와 관련, 이 소식통은 Asia Times와의 전화통화에서 ”인도가 아직 5G 상용화에 나설 상황은 아닌 것으로 알고 있다“며 ”인도 통신사와 5G 장비 테스트에 나설 예정인 것으로 알고 있다“고 말했다.
4G 장비 공급에 대해서는 ”4G는 상용화가 됐기 때문에 장비 공급에 나설 것으로 보인다“고 말했다.
인도 정부는 미국이 화웨이 거래제한 조처한 후 아직 화웨이에 5G 이동통신망 구축 사업 참여를 요청하지 않고 있다. 화웨이의 인도 사업이 금지되면 인도 이동통신망 구축 사업에 장비를 공급할 수 있는 기업은 삼성과 ZTE, 에릭슨, 노키아로 좁혀진다.
화웨이에 이어 에릭슨과 노키아도 인도에서 주요 통신장비 공급업체로 남아 있다. 하지만 보다폰 아이디어와 에어텔은 공급망 다변화를 추진하면서 삼성전자와도 접촉하고 있는 것으로 보도됐다.
삼성은 화웨이 제재를 인도를 포함한 여러 나라에 통신 장비를 공급할 기회로 보고 있다. 삼성은 특히 사이버 보안에 대해 우려하는 미국의 우방국 공략에 나서고 있다.
