More than a million Hong Kong people rallied on street on Sunday to protest against the extradition law amendment, according to the organizers.

The Civil Human Rights Front said the number of protestors amounted to 1.03 million on Sunday, doubling the number who protested in 2003 against Article 23 national security laws.

The police said there were 240,000 people on the march at its peak.

The march set off from Victoria Park at around 2:20pm and ended at around 10pm. The last of the marchers only left the park at around 7pm.

As the crowds were moving very slowly with many protestors joined in Causeway Bay and Wan Chai, some protestors climbed over barricades separating the westbound lanes set aside for them into the eastbound lanes kept open to traffic.

At around 4:30pm, police decided to open all the lanes to the marchers.

Many demonstrators were still joining the crowds in the evening. They called for the withdrawal of the Extradition Bill amendment and demanded Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor to step down. Organizers announced that the protest ended at 10pm.

Lam has not yet made any response to media enquiry. Former Chief Secretary Anson Chan Fong On-sang said the Hong Kong government should withdraw the Extradition Bill amendment and start a full consultation on the matter due to its controversy.
