LinkedIn announced it will shut down its Chinese social platform Chitu on July 31.
Chitu was launched by LinkedIn’s China team on June 23, 2015 in an effort to explore the local market, an unnamed source from LinkedIn told the Beijing News, adding that the the shut down is due to LinkedIn’s strategy adjustment in China.
There are two teams separately responsible for the development and operations of LinkedIn and Chitu in China, the source said.
LinkedIn’s China president Lu Jian told an event in May that, while Linkedin targets high-end groups of people, there’s little overlap of Chitu’s user profile. It makes the development difficult, Lu said.
“Chitu failed to find its position in the local market,” an unnamed Chitu source added.
The two teams will merge to focus on the LinkedIn brand following the strategy adjustment.
Microsoft acquired LinkedIn for US$26.2 billion in 2016. According to the financial results for the quarter ended March 31, LinkedIn posted a 27% year on year growth in revenue.
