Inside Huawei’s huge HQ campus in Shenzhen

Asia Times was given an exclusive tour of Chinese tech behemoth Huawei’s corporate headquarters in Shenzhen this week, a campus featuring a pond, natural landscaping and verdant greenery that occupies an area of more than two square kilometers.

The Huawei campus houses the company’s administration wing, key research and development facilities as well as a huge conference and training center called the Huawei University. More than 40,000 technicians and developers go to the campus each day and franchised bus companies provide mini-bus services for them as they go to different zones and blocks for work and meetings.

A 22-story glass-curtained tower is the highest building on the campus. The tower is one of the many R&D centers scattered throughout the two-square-kilometer campus.

At the center of Zone A, a pond adds to the tranquility of the scenery, where a dozen black swans are being raised under the direction of Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei. The company’s PR told Asia Times that Ren wanted members of the management to stay vigilant against any black swan events.

Huawei provides accommodation for most of its frontline employees, in two sizeable residential quarters for single and married workers, with subsidized rents. Fully furnished flats feature basic home appliances and tenants can also use movie theatres, gyms and other facilities at tenants’ clubs.

Huawei has just inaugurated another huge campus in the neighboring city of Dongguan where most of its smartphone and mobile gadget R&D and manufacturing will be done. The company also runs sizeable R&D facilities in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Wuhan.
