Nine of 26 Filipino workers accused of theft by their company in Saudi Arabia have returned to the Philippines.

According to Nasser Mustafa, the Labor Attaché of the Philippine Overseas Labor Office (POLO), a total of 26 Filipinos were stranded in Saudi Arabia after their employer accused them of theft and they were not paid their salaries. Details of the alleged theft were not given, GMA News reported.

Mustafa said POLO extended assistance to the workers, including food and personal needs. He added that the workers had not received their salaries for two years and were kicked out of their accommodation. The workers sought shelter at POLO.

Nine have been sent home after receiving approval from the Saudi Labor Office. “We are working with the Saudi government to bring home the rest of the workers as soon as possible,” Mustafa said.

Mustafa said 13 were waiting for visas to be issued, while four had decided to stay in Saudi Arabia to continue their legal battle against their employer.
