A group of Filipino women in Hong Kong have made their mark in the dragon boat races.
Every Sunday, the 29 Filipino domestic workers trained or competed on their only day off for the week, GMA News Online reported. Liza Avelino, a founder of the team Filipino Dynamos, said she started the team to help the Filipino community integrate into the Hong Kong community.
“When we’re racing, everyone is equal,” said Avelino.
Geraldine Inabiohan moved to Hong Kong in 2012 to help fund her siblings’ education in the Philippines. She sad the Dynamos wanted to encourage women to push boundaries and empower women.
Thanks to funding from two sponsors, the Dynamos have doubled the number of races they are contesting to six. Inabiohan gave credit to her employer who encouraged her to try out different sports. She was happy to be representing her country in Hong Kong.
