A court in Nghe An in northern Vietnam sentenced a man from Laos to death after he was found guilty of cross-border drug trafficking.

Tho No Bi, 37, was given the death penalty on May 31, VN Express reported. According to the indictment, Tho was hired by another Lao man late in 2018 to deliver drugs to Vietnam.

He was arrested with 10.7 kilograms of drugs on his back while moving over the border in Que Phong District. A customer in Vietnam had ordered six kilograms of methamphetamine and 48,000 ecstasy pills.

The transaction was going to rake in US$48,000 and Tho was offered $230 to make the trip. After being arrested, he was charged with the illegal trade of narcotics.

Tho confessed to the charges and explained that his family of nine kids was struggling with poverty and hunger. His job was not stable and the income was not enough to make ends meet, prompting him to carry drugs instead.

However, the panel of judges said the amount of drugs was “especially large” and gave him the death penalty instead.

In Vietnam, individuals caught with more than 600 grams of heroin or cocaine, or more than 2.5 kilograms of methamphetamine can be given the death penalty.
