저물가가 “항구적”이라기보다는 “일시적” 현상이라는 콜린 파월 미국 연방준비제도 의장의 발언이 나오자 시장은 연준의 금리 인하 가능성에 대한 기대가 과도했다고 판단했고 뉴욕 증시는 2일(현지시간) 하락세를 이어갔다.

지난주 발표된 미국의 3월 근원물가는 전년 같은 달에 비해 1.6% 상승에 그치면서 지난 연말의 2.0%에 비해 상승세가 둔화했고, 시장의 전망치보다도 낮은 수준을 나타냈다.

지난해 10월 이후 65bp 하락한 물가연동국채 수익률은 반등이 예상됐다. 하지만 이런 예상은 빗나갔다. 인플레이션은 시장의 예상치를 밑돌았다. 물가 상승률과 실업률 간의 반비례 관계를 나타내는 필립스곡선은 이제 작동하지 않는다.

하지만 파월 의장이나 연준의 이코노미스트들은 필립스곡선이 작동하지 않는 현상도 일시적인 것으로 믿고 있다.

노동통계국이 발표한 단위당 노동비용은 올해 1분기에 하락한 것으로 나타났다. 5년간의 추세를 봐도 50여년 내 최저 수준의 실업률에도 단위당 노동비용은 완만한 하향곡선을 그리고 있다. 노동통계국의 지표는 정확하지 않다. 하지만 단위 노동비용의 하락 추세를 보여주고 있는 건 분명하다. 전미구매관리자협회 4월 구매관리자지수에서도 물가 상승 압력은 나타나지 않았다.

물가지수를 보면 의문이 남는 건 분명하다. 하지만 미국 기업들은 계속해서 자동화나 아웃소싱을 추진하고 있다. 실업률이 더 하락해도 향후 12개월간 물가가 오르지는 않을 전망이다. 필립스 커브는 죽지 않았을지 몰라도 영구적인 코마 상태에 빠졌다.

이런 상황을 고려하면서 투자 포트폴리오를 구성한다면 금융주를 눈여겨 볼만하다. 금융주는 금리 상승의 수혜주다. 금융주는 2일 시중금리가 상승함에 따라 1.2% 상승했다. 미국 금융주의 예상주가수익비율은 11배 정도로 양호한 수준이다. 금융주는 유틸리티 관련주와 같이 고수익을 올릴 수 있는 종목은 아니지만, 자동화에 따른 수혜를 기대할 수 있고 금리 상승에 대한 헤지 수단이 될 수 있다.
