The Lowy Institute, an Australian think tank, released its 2019 Asia Power Index on May 28, which Vietnam ranked 13th in their capacity to influence regional events.
According to VN Express, a total of 25 countries in the Asia Pacific region were evaluated in terms of their power distribution and ranked. Categories in the evaluation include defense networks, diplomatic influence, economic resources and relationships, military capability and cultural influence.
Grouped among the “middle powers,” Vietnam scored 18.0 points out of 100. The latest score saw a 1.5 increase from last year, with credits to military upgrades, diplomatic ties and foreign policies.
The Lowy Institute report said Vietnam made good use of the multilateral arrangements they signed, including the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTTP), which helped Vietnam boost regional trade ties and economic relations.
Vietnam became the seventh nation to ratify the CPTPP — a trade pact between 11 countries — last November. Major economies including Australia, Japan and Singapore have taken part to boost trade by cutting tariffs.
