Two Filipino men were killed in an apartment-building fire in Manila on Monday evening. The fire broke out at a boarding house in Santa Cruz district at around 7pm and was put out at 9pm. Authorities have yet to determine the cause of the fire, GMA News reported.

Matronillo Amado, a security guard from an establishment near the area, said two men were seen calling for help by waving from the third floor before they disappeared.

One of the victims was crushed by debris while the second man was trapped inside a room in the burning building. The two victims were identified as Jay Saavedra, 31, and Ali Jarganta, 37.

A resident in the area said Jarganta managed to get out of the building but went back inside to get his passport and travel documents, as he was set to leave for work in Saudi Arabia.

Authorities are conducting an investigation to determine the cause of the fire and estimate the cost of damage.
