Two Filipino children – teenage brothers – died when a fire broke out early yesterday in a residential area in Tondo in the Philippine capital Manila.
The blaze broke out after 3am on Tuesday in a house in Barangay 35. The Bureau of Fire Protection said the fire was caused by a woman leaving the stove on while she went out to the market, GMA News reported.
The fire broke out in a house in Soriano Street on the corner of Sandico Street in Tondo.
The children who died were identified as Francine Hagunos, 15, and his younger brother Lance Hagunos, 12.
Fire Inspector Jose Troy Juaneza, commander of Tondo Fire Station, said the blaze lasted for over an hour and reached the second floor, where the two boys were trapped.
It was finally extinguished at 4.37am. Fire officials found the two boys’ bodies shortly after. They said the boys may have died of suffocation and being able to escape from the house.
Around 12 families were affected and lost their homes due to the fire.
