A Vietnamese man was sentenced to 20 years in jail after being found guilty of raping his neighbor’s daughter multiple times.
Tran Van Tinh, 41, formed a close relationship with the family living next to him in Quang Nam province after his wife left him. According to VN Express, he raped their 10-year-old daughter on five occasions between January and July 2016 while her parents were away.
She revealed her ordeal to her parents after Tran raped her a fifth time. The girl’s parents then promptly filed a complaint with the police. On May 7, a court in Quang Nam found him guilty and sentenced him to 20 years in prison.
In Vietnam, official statistics on sexual crimes are not published regularly. Among the 1,600 cases of child abuse that were reported in 2018, 80% of them involved sexual assault, with the perpetrator often being someone close to the victims, including relatives, teachers or neighbors.
