A man was arrested after he was found in possession of a grenade at Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 2 in Manila, Philippines.

On Friday afternoon, Deogracias Pulmano was caught with a grenade in his backpack after going through the initial screening area of the airport. Pulmano was supposed to board a domestic flight to Davao that day, Manila Standard reported.

Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) public affairs head and chief information officer Connie Bungag said airport staff asked Pulmano to show legal documents or permits that granted him a right to carry a grenade, but he failed to present any.

“Upon seeing the image, the alert screeners immediately called for the K9 unit to check the item and it was later confirmed (that it was a grenade),” Bungag said.

Pulmano was arrested and charged with illegal possession of explosives. He was taken into custody by the Philippine National Police Aviation Security Group in NAIA.

MIAA general manager Eddie Monreal urged travelers not to bring firearms, explosives and other prohibited items to the airport to avoid flight delays. Monreal said permits from the Philippine National Police must be secured for carrying guns and ammunition.
