After eight months in hiding, a man has been arrested for molesting an eight-year-old child in Laoag City, Ilocos Norte in the Philippines.

The police identified the suspect as Leonardo Andres, 46, who works as a construction worker. Andres reportedly molested his neighbor’s eight-year-old child when he was drunk, GMA News reported.

After the incident, Andres went into hiding before he was finally arrested in Claveria, Cagayan, on Thursday on molestation charges. He is currently detained at Laoag City Police Station.

Andres reportedly confessed to the crime, adding that he was drunk at the time of the incident. The suspect said he regretted what he had done and asked for forgiveness from the victim’s family. The family did not give a statement.

In the Philippines, the penalty for child abuse or molestation is imprisonment from six to twelve years along with a fine of not less than 50,000 pesos (US$955).
