Police arrested a 25-year-old man for three alleged cases of obtaining money by deception and robbing McDonald’s delivery staff in Hong Kong.
The three cases happened between May 1 and 3 in Kowloon’s Yau Ma Tei and Mong Kok when three delivery men from different McDonald’s restaurants reported to the police that they were robbed of around HK$2,000 (US$255) and attacked when they delivered food orders to a male customer, Apple Daily reported.
When the suspect called the restaurants and placed delivery orders, he informed them that he only had a HK$1,000 or HK$500 banknote, and requested that delivery staff bring enough cash to give him change.
When they arrived, the suspect told delivery staff that his wife had the money but she was not around. He asked the staff to give him the food and change first and he would return with the payment. However, in the two cases when delivery persons trusted him, the suspect failed to reappear after leaving with the money and the food.
Another delivery staff member who refused to do as he requested was punched by the suspect, news website HK01.com reported.
After checking the footage from surveillance cameras in the area, police officers arrested the suspect, who was said to be unemployed, in Mong Kok. He was detained for allegedly obtaining property by deception and robbery. He remains in detention while police officers carry out further investigations.
