A 13-year-old boy died after jumping from a footbridge in Shatin in the New Territories on Wednesday morning after a fight over homework with his parents.
At 7:30 am, a passer-by called police to report that a boy was lying on the rocks of a slope about 70 meters below a footbridge at Shui Chuen O Estate in Shatin, news website HK01.com reported.
Paramedics rushed the Form 2 student to the Prince of Wales Hospital where he was later pronounced dead. A suicide note was found, saying he was sorry to his family and felt hopeless about the future.
It was understood that the boy and his parents had a fight over homework issues the night before. He left home at 3 am and is thought to have then jumped from the bridge. Police found no suspicious circumstances, but the actual cause of death will be determined after an autopsy.
Szeto Hon-ming, a parenting specialist, said teenagers need time to adapt to a new environment when they enter secondary school. He urged parents to show more support and encouragement to their children and seek assistance from schools or counselors, the Apple Daily reported.
