A woman in Hanoi was sentenced to three years in jail after she was found guilty of arranging escorts for foreign customers at a karaoke parlor.
Nguyen Thi Chang, 27, was arrested in October 2018 when police caught two women having sex with Korean men at a hotel, VN Express reported. The four told the officers that Nguyen had “pimped” the girls to the men.
The defendant told the authorities she was employed at the Bomul Seoum Karaoke in Nam Tu Liem District in the capital. She was in charge of managing female employees and receiving guests. The employees were divided by their willingness to have sex with the customers. Those prepared to go with customers do so after working hours.
Kim Hack Bong, the 45-year-old South Korean who ran the parlor, claimed he was unaware of the prostitution and denied having any role in it.
The license of the karaoke parlor belonged to 36-year-old Nguyen Duc Hiep, who said he only helped Kim because foreigners are not eligible to official run entertainment establishments.
Authorities did not press any charges against the two men.
In Vietnam, sex workers are only sanctioned with a fine but pimps may get jail time.
