Four medical outreach programs will be carried out in the next two months for Filipino domestic workers in Hong Kong to help them check their health.

Led by Labor Attache Jalilo dela Torre, the Philippine Overseas Labor Office (POLO) has organized free medical check-ups since November last year in the wake of findings that a higher-than-normal number of the Hong Kong-based Filipino domestic workers suffered from high blood pressure and diabetes, sunwebhk.com reported.

While some workers don’t have easy access to most service providers, with the help of local churches, the medical outreach program will be held at St Joseph’s Church in Central on June 2, St Vincent Church in Hang Hau, Tseung Kwan O, on June 30.

St Thomas Church in Tsing Yi and St Francis Church in Ma On Shan, both in the New Territories, will host the services on July 14 and 21 respectively.

Meanwhile, 350 workers received free medical check-ups at St Alfred Parish in Shatin’s Taiwan on May 12 and another 350 workers went to the Holy Cross Parish in Sai Wan Ho on Hong Kong for checks on May 5.

As part of the program, speakers were invited to talk on employment-related matters and other issues concerning migrant workers, including the rights of an accused, how a worker could get help when subjected to a criminal act like physical abuse and the rights of a pregnant migrant worker.

The free medical check-up services at the POLO office remain available from Sunday to Thursday from 9 am to 4 am, and on Saturdays from 10 am to 1 pm. There will be no services on Fridays and public holidays.
