A Filipino janitor in Canada won C$7 million (US$5.1 million) after hitting the jackpot in Lotto 6/49.
Vito Halasan, who moved to Canada 10 years ago, won the prize on April 27, a few days after celebrating his 58th birthday. Halasan said he will use the money to provide the life he had dreamed of for his family, the British Columbia Lottery Corporation said in a statement.
Halasan said he called his daughter after he won and had to check the results online several times to be sure. “I remember scanning my ticket and seeing all these numbers. I couldn’t believe it,” Halasan said.
Halasan has three children and four grandchildren and plans to buy them a house. Despite winning the jackpot, he has no plans to quit his job as a janitor, but intends to scale back his hours.
“I buy lottery tickets, so I can dream. I dream of being able to take care of my kids and make their future better,” Halasan said. Lotto 6/49 is a nationwide lottery in Canada, where each draw includes a guaranteed prize of C$1 million.
