A Filipino tennis coach was sentenced to 250 years in jail by a United States court last Thursday for molesting children in California.
In July 2017, Normandie Santos Burgos, 55, was arrested by Richmond Police at a tennis center after officers were given information that he sexually assaulted a 16-year-old student, The Mercury News reported.
It was alleged that Burgos took advantage of his position as a tennis coach to threaten and force his male students, who were minors, to have sex with him in exchange for college scholarship recommendations.
On May 2, Burgos was convicted of 60 counts of child molestation, including oral copulation and sodomy with a minor, as well as other crimes. According to court records, it was not the first time Burgos had faced charges over molesting children.
Burgos worked as a tennis coach at Tamalpais High School in Marin until he lost his job in 2006. He was accused of molesting students and went on trial in 2010, but was freed after jurors failed to reach a verdict.
After the trial, Burgos opened a private tennis coaching company. He allegedly molested two teenage boys in 2014 and was arrested in 2017. Burgos was handed a 250-year jail term for his crimes, but a final sentencing date has not been set.
