Three Filipinos were killed and more than 70 injured in a collision involving a bus and a cargo truck in Quezon province, southeast of the Philippine capital Manila.

An AMC Travel and Tours bus collided with a 10-wheel truck in Atimonan on Monday night that was loaded with wood.

Police Chief Inspector Michael Encio, the police chief in Atimonan, confirmed that the driver of the truck, his assistant and a passenger in the bus were killed in the accident, GMA News reported.

A report in the Philippine Daily Inquirer confirmed that the casualties were Benedict Borja Belencio, 29, who was the driver of the truck, his assistant Micheal Gerona Sy, 28, and Pio Jacob Del Monte, 46, who was a passenger on the bus.

The accident happened on Diversion Road in Atimonan. The bus was bound for Bicol province while the truck was headed for Manila. According to the police, the bus driver had tried to overtake a car and lost control before slamming into the approaching truck.

More than 70 people were injured. They were taken to Dona Marta General Hospital and the Nuestra Senora Delos Angeles Hospital in the area. Some of the seriously injured passengers were transferred to a hospital in Lucena City.
