At least 20 people were injured after a bus crashed into metal roadside railings in Tagkawayan, Quezon in the Philippines.

Late on Thursday night the bus, which was heading to Manila from Irosin, Sorsogon, hit the railings and a tree before tumbling into a canal. Police said the bus, which was carrying around 70 passengers, was allegedly speeding, GMA News reported.

The injured passengers were rushed to Tagkawayan District Hospital. Passengers said the driver had been driving very quickly and was told to slow down. The driver, Allan Robles, fled the scene after the accident.

On Friday morning, Robles surrendered to the police, saying that he did not run away, but only went to a restaurant nearby. Robles said on the night of the accident, he was trying to avoid a truck but hit the barrier, which made the bus flip onto its side.

According to Police Staff Sgt. Ronaldo Dionido of Philippine National Police-Tagkawayan, Robles is facing charges of reckless imprudence resulting to multiple physical injury and damage to property.
