인도 공군의 미그 21 전투기가 우월한 성능을 보유한 파키스탄 공군의 F-16 전투기를 격추했다는 인도 공군의 주장은 근거가 없는 것으로 드러났다.

Asia Times는 지난 3월 5일 미그 21기가 F-16기를 격추했다는 인도 공군의 주장을 입증할 만한 증거가 없다고 보도한 바 있다. 이어 4월5일 미국의 격월간 외교 전문지 포린폴리시(Foreign Policy)는 파키스탄 공군이 보유한 F-16기 수에 변화가 없는 것으로 미국 정부가 확인했다고 보도했다.

복수의 파키스탄 군 소식통은 Asia Times 기자에게 파키스탄 공군의 F-16 편대는 사르고다와 미안왈리에 있는 두 곳의 공군기지에 집결해 있다고 밝혔다. 바로 미국 정부 관료들이 F-16 기체수를 확인한 공군기지다.

지난 2월 14일 인도령 카슈미르에서 자살폭탄테러가 발생해 최소 40명의 인도 군인이 사망하자, 인도는 26일 보복 조치로 공군기를 동원해 파키스탄령 카슈미르의 발라코트의 테러리스트 본거지로 의심되는 지역을 폭격했다. 인도 공군기가 파키스탄을 공습하자 파키스탄 공군이 반격에 나서 지난 1971년 발생한 양국 간 전쟁 이후 처음으로 공중전이 벌어졌다..

인도 공군은 이 교전에서 파키스탄 공군기 1대를 격추했고, 인도 공군도 미그-21기 1대를 잃었다고 밝혔다. 격추된 미그 21기의 조종사가 탈출하기 전 파키스탄 공군의 F-16 전투기 1기를 격추했다는 주장이었다. 격추된 인도 공군 미그-21기 조종사 아비난단 바타나 중령은 인도로 귀환했다.

하지만 Asia Times의 취재 결과 격추된 인도 미그-21기의 잔해에서 발견된 미사일은 발사되지 않았던 것으로 드러났다.

파키스탄군 고위 관계자는 Asia Times 기자에게 “미사일 4개가 모두 발견됐는데 어떻게 인도는 아비난단 중령이 미사일을 발사해 F-16기를 격추했다고 주장할 수 있겠나”고 말했다.

파키스탄 군 대변인은 격추된 미그-21기에 장착된 두 개의 R-77 아데르 미사일과 2개의 R-72 아처 미사일 잔해 사진을 공개했다. 4기의 미사일 잔해 R-73 1기와 R-77 1기는 다른 미사일에 비해 손상 정도가 컸다. 항공기 전문가들은 미그-21기가 미사일을 양쪽 날개 밑에 한쌍의 미사일을 장착한다는 점을 고려하면 이 두 기의 미사일은 비행기 추락시 지면과 충돌하면서 더 큰 손상을 입은 것으로 추정했다.

미그-21기에 장착된 미사일은 추적장치와 조정부, 탄두, 퓨즈와 추진체의 4개 파트로 구성돼 있다. 사진속 미사일 중 2기의 추진체가 불에 탄 것으로 나타났다. 이를 두고 미사일이 발사됐다는 주장이 나올 수도 있으나 전문가들은 추진체의 튜브가 완전히 파괴되지 않고 일부 손상에 그친 것을 고려할 때 미사일이 발사됐을 가능성은 작다고 밝혔다.

인도는 추락한 전투기 조종사 아비난단 중령이 교신 중 “자동 추적 중(locked on)”이라고 말했다는 것을 근거로 F-16기 격추를 주장하고 있다. 교전 중 미그-21기의 레이더가 표적(파키스탄 공군기)을 찾아 자동추적 장치가 가동한 끝에 적기를 격추시켰다는 얘기다.

인도 군 당국은 또 파키스탄이 공군이 인도와 교전 중 F-16을 사용한 것은 미국과의 합의 위반이라며 미국을 겨냥했다. 그러자 미국이 조사에 나섰고, 파키스탄이 미국으로부터 구입한 F-16은 물론 요르단으로부터 도입한 F-16의 수까지 파악하게 됐다.

한편 지난 2월27일 발생한 교전 후 파키스탄이 한 명이 아닌 두 명의 인도 공군 조종사를 사로잡았다는 주장도 있다. 파키스탄이 인도 공군기 2대를 격추했다는 얘기다. 반면에 인도는 파키스탄 부대 간 교신 내용을 도청했다며 도청을 통해 두명 중 한 명은 파키스탄의 F-16 조종사였다고 주장한다. Asia Times의 취재 과정에서 이런 양측의 주장은 확인되지 않았다.
